Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is “Above Ground Comedy“? Above Ground Comedy is a production company which produces a weekly live open mike/headline act stand up comedy show with the help of  Station Sports Bar on Wednesdays in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 8:30PM-10:30PM.  Formed in July 2009 and owned and operated by comedian, Cameron Brexler, Above Ground Comedy provides a thrilling comedy club experience for comics and patrons that premiered Wednesday, August 26, 2009.  Brexler, whom spent several years touring comedy clubs throughout the US, insists, “if comics do well here, they’ll make it above ground anywhere” (pun intended).

Q: What is an open mike?  Comedy open mike nights give newer acts an opportunity to practice and improve, with a view to getting paid work. More experienced acts get an opportunity to work out newer material where the audience is not paying in anticipation of seeing their normal act. In a typical open mike night, newer acts will get five or maybe ten minutes of stage time, but more experienced acts may get ten or more minutes.

Q: Is the open mike open to anyone other than people named Mike?  Yes.  Anyone ‘open’ to pick up the ‘mike’ (abbreviated term for microphone) and perform stand up comedy is allowed.  However, you must be at least 18 years of age with a valid photo ID to enter the establishment.

Q: How do I sign up for the open mike?  If you are interested in performing, please arrive at Station Sports Bar on day of event and sign your name (email and phone # is optional) on the sign up sheet located at the entrance between 7:00PM-8:00PM (hint: Get there early!).  If there are more than 10 signees for that particular night, then you have the option of remaining as stand by and/or signing up for the following show in advance.  Performers get in free.  Bring at least one guest with you; the more guests you have, the better your slot.

Q: What is a headline actThe headline act is what separates this open mike from any other.  Immediately following the open mike, a seasoned, renown comic (generally on tour) stops by to deliver their 30-45 minute act while incorporating newer bits of material into his/her performance.

Q: What can I expect as an audience member?  Audience members can expect to want to come back every week.  Many are pleasantly surprised by the talented array of comedians, state-of-the-art lighting, high quality sound, and the comfortable cocktail lounge  atmosphere to enjoy a complete evening of laughs, drinks, food, prizes, and more.  Of course, you have to see it and hear it to believe it.  So bring your friends, family, co-workers, and significant other to join in the excitement this Wednesday!   See ya then!

Sorry, no pets allowed.  Thanks!
